EMMYS 2015, PREDICTIONS

Updated 21/9/15 [Time to see how badly I predicted this]

It is extremely rare for my favorites to actually win an Emmy – or even get nominated for that matter. So, instead of posting my “dream winners” I decided to play the odds.

Ten main categories, ten predictions… How many can I get right? We will find out on Sunday.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES

 “Better Call Saul”
“Downton Abbey”
“Game of Thrones” * WINNER!
“Homeland”
“House of Cards”
“Mad Men”
“Orange is the New Black”

With no confidence whatsoever, I am predicting a win for Game of Thrones. Don’t ask me why. Rationally, I think it is unlikely. But I also think that giving GoT an award after the most controversial season among fans might be something the Emmy people would do.

The more logical choice would be Better Call Saul – the shiny new thing – or Mad Men – because everyone is a sucker for a final season.

I am almost sure I will get this wrong, but I had to make at least one bold – slightly crazy – prediction. And imagine how cool it would be if I were the only one to call it!

My crazy prediction paid off! I really didn't see it happening - with the Emmys having a thing against fantasy. But my gut feeling turned out to be right!

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES

“Louie”
“Modern Family”
“Parks and Recreation”
“Sillicon Valley”
“Transparent” *
“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”
“Veep” WINNER

I have not watched Transparent yet, so I have no idea of how good it is. But I am hoping that it is good enough to dethrone Modern Family… because come on… Steven Levitan makes really funny acceptance speeches but enough is enough.

I am secretly hoping that Unbreakable Kimmy snatches a surprise win… but I think the voters would go with Amy [for Parks & Rec] before Tina [Fey]  this year. Both are sadly unlikely.

Yeah, I clearly didn't see this one coming. I thought it would be Transparent or Modern Family again... I guess I should really watch this show... [I love Julia, not sure why I don't watch it]

LEAD ACTOR, DRAMA

Bob Odenkirk – Better Call Saul*
Kyle Chandler – Bloodline
Kevin Spacey – House of Cards
Jon Hamm – Mad Men WINNER!
Jeff Daniels – The Newsroom
Live Schreiber – Ray Donovan

This one I am picking on logic. It could be argued that Jon Hamm is long overdue and this is his last chance… I would love for him to win. But I don’t think he will. So, who will take it? The 500 Emmys Bryan Cranston won suggest the voters watched Breaking Bad, so it would be a fair to assume that they are watching Better Call Saul. My second guess would be Kevin Spacey.

On a related note, if Rami Malek doesn’t get a nomination next year… there is no fairness in the world and all Emmy voters deserve to get hacked.
I was wrong! But I am so happy. Don Draper needed to go out with that statue. This makes me wonder though... are all the Breaking Bad fan voters not watching Better Call Saul? In any case... yay

LEAD ACTRESS, DRAMA

Taraji P. Henson – Empire*
Claire Danes – Homeland
Viola Davis – How to Get Away with Murder WINNER
Tatiana Maslany – Orphan Black
Elisabeth Moss – Mad Men
Robin Wright – House of Cards

This one has me torn. Tatiana is not going to win [even though she deserves it]. Claire Danes is too 2012 and I don’t think Robin has enough buzz. Elisabeth Moss is very VERY likely. She is great, everyone loves her, last season and all that. However, I think it will go to either Taraji or Viola. My logic says Viola… my gut says Taraji for some reason. So I am going with that.

I almost got it right! At least it was one of the two I predicted.

LEAD ACTOR, COMEDY

Anthony Anderson – Black-ish
Matt LeBlanc – Episodes
Don Cheadle – House of Lies
Will Forte – The Last Man on Earth
Louis C.K. – Louie
William H. Macy – Shameless
Jeffrey Tambor – Transparent* WINNER

This category was probably the easiest to predict. Jeffrey Tambor has this. I will be extremely surprised if he doesn’t win, but my second guess would be Will Forte followed by Matt LeBlanc.

Told ya.

LEAD ACTRESS, COMEDY

Lisa Kudrow – The Comeback
Lily Tomlin – Grace and Frankie*
Amy Schumer – Inside Amy Schumer
Edie Falco – Nurse Jackie
Amy Poehler – Parks and Recreation
Julia Louis-Dreyfus - Veep WINNER

By process of elimination. Not Lisa. Not Edie [I keep forgetting Nurse Jackie is still on the air], not Julia. This leaves Amy Poehler, Amy Schumer and Lily Tomlin. The voters are not edgy enough to give it to Amy and my flawed logic tells me that if they wanted to give the Emmy to Amy Poehler they would have done so by now [she totally deserves it BTW]. So that leaves the reliable established actress: Lily Tomlin. Don’t get me wrong, she is great, but it would be a “safe” choice.

Nope... another one that I did not see coming. I clearly need to start watching Veep. But Julia is amazing so I am glad... The Emmys clearly know better than some other awards...

SUPPORTING ACTOR, DRAMA

Jonathan Banks – Better Call Saul*
Jim Carter – Downton Abbey
Peter Dinklage – Game of Thrones WINNER
Alan Cumming – The Good Wife
Michael Kelly – House of Cards

In a perfect world – according to me – all the awards ever would go to Peter Dinklage… but I don’t think that is going to happen. I think the Emmy will either got o Jonathan Banks or Jim Carter. Leaning towards Jonathan because he had a more dramatic role.

Another wrong prediction that makes me SO happy!! My love for Tyrion/Peter Dinklage knows no limits. There is fairness in the world after all!

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, DRAMA

Joanne Froggatt – Downton Abbey*
Lena Headey – Game of Thrones
Emilia Clarke – Game of Thrones
Christine Baranski – The Good Wife
Christina Hendricks – Mad Men
Uzo Aduba – Orange is the New Black WINNER

OK… this could go to anyone. So I am just making a random guess and assuming Emilia and Lena are going to cancel each other out.

Not very shocking. I thought this was a possibility.

SUPPORTING ACTOR, COMEDY

Andre Braugher – Brooklyn Nine-nine
Adam Driver – Girls
Keegan-Michael Key – Key & Peele
Ty Burrell – Modern Family
Tituss Burgess – Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt*
Tony Hale - Veep WINNER

Very tentatively picking Tituss and I so hope I am right because Kimmy needs some love! And… I mean… Peeno Noir – Come on! But… I also think Ty Burrell [the only Modern Family nominee] wining is a strong possibility.

OK... I am starting to get a bit annoyed. Can the Emmys have some variety? They always give all the awards to one show. They clearly love Veep this year... Nothing wrong with that, I am sure it is good and Tony Hale is hilarious, but... come on... "Peeno Noir!"

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, COMEDY

Mayim Bialik – The Big Bang Theory
Niecy Nash – Getting On
Julie Bowen – Modern Family*
Allison Janney – Mom WINNER
Kate McKinnon – SNL
Gaby Hoffmann – Transparent
Jane Krakowski – Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Anna Chlumsky – Veep

I am personally rooting for Mayim or Jane – who is consistently hilarious on every show – but I think this will either go to Julie Bowen or Allison Janey. The Emmys need some amount of predictability after all.

She was my second choice...
There you go… my 10 predictions… I am guessing that at least half are wrong. But we’ll see… What do you think? Will GoT take the Emmy? Could Tatiana be rewarded for playing 10+ characters? Is the Modern Family era finally over?

Come back on Monday to see me either gloat or hide in shame.

So... I got a whopping total of 2/10... I did worse than I thought! Apparently predicting award winners... not one of my talents. But I am mostly pleased with the winners... so there's that.

Now excuse me while I go watch Veep - which apparently I have to love.
