THE FATE OF SUMMER TV

We are about 4 weeks in the new Fall TV Season and we are already [prematurely] freaking out about ratings and cancellations. But whatever happened to all the summer shows we loved (and mostly hated)? For some reason no-one seems to remember summer shows get cancelled too. So here is a quick summary of what went down with summer TV this year:

Surprisingly a lot of summer shows survived this year. Anne Hetche’s Save Me was basically cancelled before it even premiered and I thought Camp may have a chance… but apparently not. I hope somebody casts Rachel Griffiths on a show for next year. The saddest summer cancellation, in my opinion, was The Goodwin Games. It was a quirky, charming comedy that nobody watched… Another victim of questionable programming techniques [of FOX]. Crossing Lines is in no man’s land right now. It was renewed internationally (Europe and international SONY distribution), but NBC hasn’t made a decision. I am just glad the show will continue filming; I thought it was a fresh take on the police procedural and that isn’t easy to come by! Big shockers include: Mistresses, The Fosters and Motive. Mistresses just crossed the line from primetime show to full on melodrama and was nowhere near as good as the British original. I was surprised The Fosters got renewed before Twisted  [which will probably be renewed soon] and I thought Motive was awful… but I only watched a couple of episodes… so maybe it got better? On the cable side, a couple of hits were born this summer: Graceland, The Bridge, Devious Maids and Ray Donovan; happy to see all those shows coming back. Once again summer seems to belong to cable, except for the CBS breakout hit Under the Dome.

So that’s it for the summer shows I could remember… now we can go back to having a nervous breakdown each week after the ratings of our favorite fall shows are posted. If I forgot any show let me know in the comments!

  1. I like Mistresses and I'm glad it's renewed, but let's be honest that's not a great show. Maybe liking it more because I missed Alyssa M. on TV lol !
Surprised about Twisted too, I really fell for that one !
    Haven't Watch the rest.

    1. OK, I confess... even though I've been saying that Mistresses US missed the mark when adapting the UK version and that it was too soapy... I think I will watch S2 haha, I am curious enough and I do like Alyssa Milano... but still... as you said, let's be honest a LOT of shows are better haha... As far as I know Twisted hasn't been [officially] renewed yet which is surprising...
